how does a overflow system work and other types of filtration work. Im currently using a cpr backpack protein skimmer but i am upgrading from a 20 gallon to a 60 gallon and need to know what other types exist and how to set them up any pictures would help.
An overflow moves water from the main display to a sump or another tank (lower than the display tank), then a return pump pushes water back into the tank. The good thing about a sump is, it give more volume for stability, it also allows you to put heaters and skimmers out of view. Some people use different types of algae to help export unwanted nutrients (Ammonia, Nitrate, and Phosphate - and help stablize pH if using a reverse cycle lighting), others use live rock, and others still use nothing. You can also add a filter sock that takes out detritus.
Depeding on the type of other filtration you are looking at, some are mechanical, some are biological, and some are both. Did you have any specific ones in mind?
Both types of filtration have advantages and disadvantages.
