Emerald crab vs. zoa's

has anybody ever had issues with there emerald crab eating zoa's... we lost one frag (Who-Dah? cat eye's) about two week ago. this morning I noticed another frag was gone (watermelon zoa's) and the emerald was under the rock eating away!!!. Is this normal for emeralds to do?

that's what I thought when I was loosing mine, but I was told he was eating away at leftover food. Then found a fireworm (like a bristle but red) later on. Do some searching with a light after lights out.

Have you thought about a fresh water dip for pests?

yup... I do dips on all new additions... after the dip they get a good inspection with a magnifying glass.. so it's not pest related, plus I caught him in the act... and no fireworms.. my wife does a lot of nocturnal viewing on both tank's.

I had an emerald that liked to grab frags, but never saw him eat them... sounds like turf and surf for dinner tonight!

I had one kill and eat a clam. I caught him sitting underneath, reaching up and taking chunks out of the mantle. I tried to catch him, but he was too fast. The next morning...empty shell. I'm sure he killed it, and then everyone else joined in on the feast.

My emerald picks at all my corals but never damaged any, I just figured he was eating stuff off them and not the corals.

Yup, Emerald crabs can (and do) turn on Zoanthids.

Usually when they get larger.

secondly, yes- as long as he's still eating and doesn't have anymore run-ins with the crab his fin will grow back.

I did some zoa fraging for Mai's tank last week(6 frags).. after being in my tank on a frag rack I moved it to her tank and with in a hour the emerald had one frag in its death grip munching away.. I gave it a good smack with a turkey baster and he let go of the frag and I re glued it to a new plug.. I moved her "zoa rock" off of the rock pile and put it in the front of the tank by the glass on the sand bed.. went back to check 15min later and the evil destroyer was back.. this time i was ready.. grabbed a net and caught him.. now he is in the sump/fuge..

You got some murderous emerald crabs (assuming they are the one catching the fish and are not just cleaning up the "dead" fish). Still, WOW!

Three seas has a big Emerald Crab in their main tank when you first walk in the door. I would stand there and watch him nip at fish with his claws as they swam by. LOL.
